LEATHER HELMET
Soviet Air Force leather flying helmet
A variaton of the heavy leather fur-lined VVS open cockpit leather helmet, this specimen features a long throat flap, but is missing the neck protection. The goggles retaining straps and earflaps are also of a different shape.
Mira goggles
The goggles were manufactured in the 1930ies by Mira of Spain. They feature a wide, soft unlined one-piece rubber face cushion which holds aluminium lenses with celluliod lenses.
Russian pilots of the Republican Air Force and German pilots of the Legion Condor both used these widely available goggles during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
They saw then wide use within the VVS throughout WWII.
