HGU-55 AN/AVS-9 (V) NVG
The HGU-55s used on F/A-18 Hornets are provided with brackets for the installation of the "banana mount" suitable for the fitting of night vision system NVG (Night Vision Goggles) ANVIS-9 (Aviator's Night Vision Imaging System-9) - more correctly AN/AVS-9 (V).
Given the current limits in Switzerland regarding night operations, flight with NVG is mainly practised by SAF pilots in annual training campaigns, in the past "NIGHTWAY" held in Norway and since 2017 as exercise "SCOTNIGHT", hosted by Scotland's RAF Lossiemouth AB.
If deemed necessary, the pilot may request to be provided with a pair of protective EEK-XX/P goggles.
