The second, internally wired pattern of the Type E incorporated all the improvements also seen on the later Type C helmets. It was introduced in 1945 and saw post-war use until the late 1950s. After that even pilots in commercial jet airliners adopted the helmet, rather than wearing headsets.

This type of spectacles was reportedly not designed for aircrew as its leather protection restricted lateral vision. It was issued to non-flying personnel, a fact which does not exclude the odd pilot to wear them for eye protection also in flight.
