ATTACK SQUADRON 22 “FIGHTING REDCOCKS” (VA-22) was a typical A-4 Skyhawk unit since the flew the various versions of the “Scooter” from 1961 until 1971, when they transitionned on the Link Temco Vought A-7 Corsair II.

VA-22 partecipated in 6 WESTPAC cruises off the coast of Vietnam, mainly aboard USS Midway (CVA-41).
​
This APH-5 helmet was probably worn during the 1965 cruise, since at the time VA-22 used a mixture of APH-5’s and APH-6’s helmets.
